THE RAILS ATLAS · REFERENCE

Every country rebuilt money. Here's the map.

Seventeen instant-payment systems, one card each: who runs it, how you address a payment, and the one detail professionals actually need to know. The full mechanics are in the instant-payments chapter.

17 SYSTEMS · 6 CONTINENTS OF PLUMBING
🇮🇳

UPI

INDIA · LIVE SINCE 2016
OPERATORNPCI (non-profit utility)ADDRESS BYPhone number · UPI ID · QR
The world's largest by volume — 23B+ transactions a month, ₹0 merchant fees by mandate. Exporting itself via UPI–PayNow and acceptance deals abroad.
🇧🇷

Pix

BRAZIL · LIVE SINCE 2020
OPERATORBanco Central do Brasil itselfADDRESS BYPhone · email · tax ID · QR
Fastest payment adoption in history: the central bank built it, mandated big banks in, and priced it free for individuals. Now bigger than cards and cash combined in Brazil.
🇨🇳

IBPS + wallet rails

CHINA · LIVE SINCE 2010s
OPERATORPBoC + Alipay/WeChat ecosystemsADDRESS BYQR everywhere
The twist: the dominant 'rails' are two private super-app ledgers with central-bank plumbing underneath — so dominant the PBoC stepped in to regulate them as infrastructure.
🇹🇭

PromptPay

THAILAND · LIVE SINCE 2017
OPERATORNational ITMXADDRESS BYPhone · national ID · QR
Tied to the national ID system from day one; one of the highest per-capita real-time usage rates on earth. Linked live with Singapore's PayNow.
🇸🇬

PayNow

SINGAPORE · LIVE SINCE 2017
OPERATORBanking Computer Services / ABSADDRESS BYPhone · NRIC · UEN · QR
Small market, outsized influence: the UPI–PayNow link made it the proof-of-concept for cross-border instant corridors and Project Nexus.
🇵🇭

InstaPay

PHILIPPINES · LIVE SINCE 2018
OPERATORBancNet, under BSP oversightADDRESS BYAccount · phone · QR Ph
Powers the GCash/Maya wallet boom — the Philippines is a wallet-first market where the instant rail is the invisible settlement layer.
🇲🇾

DuitNow

MALAYSIA · LIVE SINCE 2019
OPERATORPayNetADDRESS BYPhone · ID · QR
Part of the ASEAN QR-linking wave: DuitNow QR already works in Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia — the regional mesh forming in real time.
🇵🇰

Raast

PAKISTAN · LIVE SINCE 2021
OPERATORState Bank of PakistanADDRESS BYPhone · IBAN
Central-bank built (with Gates Foundation backing) explicitly for financial inclusion — the Pix playbook adapted for a cash-heavy economy.
🇳🇬

NIP

NIGERIA · LIVE SINCE 2011
OPERATORNIBSSADDRESS BYAccount · phone (via apps)
The quiet pioneer: instant, 24/7 bank transfers a decade before FedNow. Transfers are THE retail payment method in Nigeria — cards never got the chance.
🇰🇪

M-PESA

KENYA · LIVE SINCE 2007
OPERATORSafaricom (telecom!)ADDRESS BYPhone number
Not a bank rail at all — a telecom's stored-value ledger that became a national payment system and the founding legend of mobile money.
🇲🇽

SPEI

MEXICO · LIVE SINCE 2004
OPERATORBanco de MéxicoADDRESS BYCLABE · phone (CoDi overlay)
One of the oldest central-bank instant systems — proof the tech existed 20 years ago; what was missing elsewhere was the will.
🇺🇸

RTP + FedNow

UNITED STATES · LIVE SINCE 2017 / 2023
OPERATORThe Clearing House / Federal ReserveADDRESS BYAccount-based (no national alias)
Two rails, no shared directory, no mandate — the control group for what happens without adoption policy. Zelle (bank consortium) handles the P2P aliasing separately.
🇬🇧

Faster Payments

UNITED KINGDOM · LIVE SINCE 2008
OPERATORPay.UKADDRESS BYSort code + account · Paym (retired)
The pioneer that taught everyone the hard lesson: instant + irrevocable = APP-scam wave, which is why the UK now mandates victim reimbursement.
🇪🇺

SEPA Instant

EURO AREA · LIVE SINCE 2017
OPERATOREPC scheme / ECB TIPS settlementADDRESS BYIBAN (+ Verification of Payee)
36 countries, ≤10 seconds. Adoption was voluntary and slow — so the EU mandated it: receive by Jan 2025, send by Oct 2025, priced like a normal transfer.
🇸🇪

Swish

SWEDEN · LIVE SINCE 2012
OPERATORBank consortium + Riksbank tiesADDRESS BYPhone number
The reason Sweden is nearly cashless. A bank-owned app so dominant that 'swisha' is a verb — consortium rails CAN win, given small markets and total bank alignment.
🇪🇸

Bizum

SPAIN · LIVE SINCE 2016
OPERATORSpanish bank consortiumADDRESS BYPhone number
Spain's Swish — built on SEPA Instant underneath. Shows the pattern: the rail is the plumbing; the alias app is what citizens actually adopt.
🇦🇺

NPP / PayID

AUSTRALIA · LIVE SINCE 2018
OPERATORNPP Australia (RBA-backed)ADDRESS BYPayID: phone · email · ABN
Launched with the alias layer built in (PayID) — learning from everyone who bolted it on later. Osko is the consumer overlay on top.
THE PATTERNS

Seventeen systems, four lessons.

1
The alias is the adoption engine. Every runaway success lets you pay a phone number or QR, not an account number. Systems that kept bank-account addressing (looking at you, US) stayed niche.
2
Who operates it predicts how it grows. Central-bank-run (Pix, SPEI) and public-utility-run (UPI, NIP) systems mandate participation and price low. Bank-consortium rails (Swish, Bizum, Zelle) grow only as fast as the banks' incentives allow.
3
Emerging markets lead, rich markets lag. The less legacy card infrastructure a country had, the faster instant rails won. The leapfrog is the story of payments in this decade.
4
The next chapter is links, not launches. UPI–PayNow, Nexus, Pix corridors: nearly every system below is negotiating connections to the others. The atlas is becoming a network.
